Research Interests
Markers of rat alveolar epithelial cell development and differentiation. Regulation of pulmonary epithelial cell differentiation. Acute and chronic lung injury and the factors that influence recovery. Transport properties of pulmonary alveolar epithelium. Cell pathophysiology of alveolar epithelium (e.g., lung injury and pathogenesis of alveolar pulmonary edema). Stem cell biology in lung injury.

 

 
Research in Progress
Isolation and characterization of type II and type I alveolar epithelial cells. Characterization of type II and type I pneumocyte development in vitro. Characterization of Na+, K+, Cl-, and protein transport across alveolar epithelium. Mechanisms and pathways of pulmonary alveolar epithelial transport of small ions (e.g., Na+, Cl-, K+) and macromolecules (e.g., proteins). Polarization of membrane proteins (e.g., distribution of ion channels, receptors, Na+, K+-ATPase) in alveolar epithelium. Biology of cell-cell junctions in alveolar epithelium. Interactions of nanomaterials with alveolar epithelium.
