Florian Mansfeld Interviewed in Documentary "Corrosion and Degradation"

July 17, 2008 — Florian Mansfeld was interviewed by Robert Hughes, the producer of the documentary "Corrosion and Degradation" that will air on the History Channel in late October as part of the "Modern Marvels" series.

Prof. Mansfeld was asked to provide background information about corrosion and to explain the basic concepts of corrosion, why metals corrode, which metals corrode and why these metals corrode at different rates.  He also explained the electrochemical mechanisms of corrosion and gave examples for methods of corrosion protection. The economic, safety and environmental impact of corrosion was also discussed. The economic losses in the US were $271B in 2002 of which 25% could be saved if the known methods of corrosion prevention and control would always be applied. Prof. Mansfeld suggested that more engineering students should take a class dealing with corrosion science and technology.
