The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has honored Kristian Jessen, professor in the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, with a Distinguished Member Award for 2021.

Established in 1983, the Distinguished Member Award recognizes SPE members who achieve distinction deemed worthy of special recognition. The award acknowledges members who are eminent within the petroleum industry or the academic community, or who have made significant contributions to SPE.

Jessen’s research activities combine modeling, simulation and experimental work to explain and understand the fundamentals of multiphase multicomponent flow and mass transfer in porous materials. His work aims to advance the fundamental knowledge of these complex processes in the context of enhanced oil and gas recovery from conventional and unconventional resources, and carbon sequestration in geological formations.

Jessen, who received his Ph.D from the Technical University of Denmark, first came to USC Viterbi in 2006, following a role as acting faculty and research associate at Stanford University’s Department of Petroleum Engineering.

He has previously been honored with SPE’s 2021 Regional Health, Safety, and Environment Award, SPE’s 2015 Regional Reservoir Description and Dynamics Award, SPE’s 2011 Regional Outstanding Faculty Award, as well as the 2014 Orange County Engineering Council Outstanding Engineering Educator Award.
