Biography

Jay H. Lee is the Choon Hoon Cho Chair and Professor at USC. Prior to joining USC, he was a faculty member of several global universities including Auburn, Purdue, Georgia Tech, and KAIST. At KAIST, he had various administrative roles including department chair, associate vice president for international office, and director of Saudi Aramco-KAIST CO2 Management Center. His work is intended to bring modeling, optimization, and machine learning tools to help solve challenging design, operation, and logistics problems in the areas of energy transition and sustainability.

Research Summary

Research in the Lee laboratory (called ‘LENS^2E - Laboratory for Energy and Sustainable Systems Engineering’) focuses broadly on the topic of design and operation of energy and chemical systems with emphasis on sustainability. We combine mathematical modeling/simulation, optimization, and AI methods into coherent multi-layer methodologies and algorithms, and apply them to various problems found in energy transition and sustainability. Current projects include: (1)Battery system’s state of health (SOH) and remining useful life (RUL) estimation using machine learning tools; (2)early stage evaluation of CO2 capture and conversion technologies; (3)Spatio-temporal design of CO2 based product supply chain networks; (4)hydrogen production and distribution network design; (5)modular CO2 capture using rotating packed bed (RPB) system.
